Author Briones aims to help younger readers understand, and adults help articulate, the difference between someone who is “macho,” or strong and manly, and someone who exhibits “machismo,” a toxic, sexist, and bullying form of masculinity. As Briones explains it: “There is nothing wrong with being a macho. A macho is kind, caring, and a good steward. Machismos are the exact opposite.” The book can help spark important conversations about identity and destructive behaviors, and two follow-up books on this topic will be published in 2025...

Know Culture Publishing was founded in 2021 by Miguel Briones, an ESL EC-6 Certified educator, award-winning author, and community advocate. All the company’s books are bilingual, with the Spanish-language text appearing first and the English translation second.

“Our mission is to foster a holistic, equitable, and compassionate approach to teaching literacy,” Briones says. “We aim to empower students, families, and school district staff by improving literacy and writing through the creation of culturally relevant bilingual books, bilingual author visits, speaking engagements, and youth writing workshops.”
